Photoshop Tutorials - Studio Background

This tutorial illustrates how to create a studio background effect from a 2D background using the Transform/Distort tool. The result is to add a floor to your background.

Step 1

Open a background. Choose the rectangular marquee tool from the toolbox and select the bottom part of the image.

Step 2

Select Transform-Distort from the Edit menu. Click the 3rd screen mode button on the toolbox palette for full screen mode. Drag the bottom left point to the left about 2 inches. Then press Enter. Press f on the keyboard to return to Standard screen mode.

Step 3

Press shift control I to inverse the selection. Notice the top part of the background is now selected. In the Select menu choose Feather, type 50 and press Enter.

Step 4

Press Control-L to bring up the Levels dialog. Move the middle (Midtone) slider to the right to darken the top part of backdrop.

Step 5

Your done. Now just add your subject to the picture.
